Shopify's AI Orders Tripled. Stripe's AI Reacceleration Shows It's Not a Coincidence.

Auto-generated note

Shopify’s storefronts and Stripe’s checkout pages sit at opposite ends of the same transaction, and AI is reshaping both at once, in the same direction. Shopify’s Q2 2026 results show AI referral traffic to its storefronts tripling year-over-year, AI-generated order volume tripling, and new-buyer conversion from AI-driven channels running at roughly twice the rate of traditional channels — inside a quarter where revenue hit $3.58 billion (34% YoY growth), gross merchandise volume reached $115.6 billion (up 32%, a fifth straight quarter above 30% GMV growth), and free cash flow hit $654 million for an 18% margin, per SaaStr’s Jason Lemkin.

Lemkin’s sharpest finding is about data structure, not traffic volume: Shopify Catalog, a structured feed of more than 1 billion products, converts at double the rate of scraped product data when AI shopping agents pull from it. That’s a concrete case that the format merchants publish their inventory in is becoming a conversion variable in its own right, not just an SEO one. Shopify’s revenue mix is tilting further toward transaction volume too — Merchant Solutions revenue hit $2.78 billion (up 37%, 78% of total revenue) versus Subscription Solutions’ $802 million (up 22%) — meaning more of Shopify’s growth is now tied directly to orders moving through its rails, AI-originated or not.

A prior SaaStr breakdown of Stripe shows the same shift from a different seat at the table: part of Stripe’s reacceleration to $6.8 billion in 2025 revenue (33% growth, its fastest since 2021) is attributed directly to processing payments for OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI-native companies, inside a period that also saw $1.9 trillion in payment volume.

Two vendors, two vantage points on the same transaction, one conclusion: AI isn’t a feature bolted onto commerce infrastructure anymore. It’s already showing up in the volume moving through it.
